Faculty People

Selected as the university to carry out the Innovative Human Resources Development project for Smart City in 2019 (from 2019 to 2023) by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Korea Agency for Infrastructure Technology Advancement (KAIA), Seoul National University plans to carry forward the training of core professionals necessary for industrial revitalization and expansion to the overseas market with the specialized education program reflecting the need of the smart city industry. In order to train the core professionals, we have newly set up the Smart City Engineering Program in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and enhanced the linkage with the undergraduate courses by utilizing diversity of the participating professors of seven Departments (Dept. of the Civil and Environmental Engineering, Dept. of the Computer Science and Engineering, Dept. of the Architecture and Architectural Engineering, etc.). *The number of participating professors will be increased in the future.

Coastal engineering and river hydraulics deal with waves and flows in coastal regions, estuaries and rivers, which are important for the human life and the ecosystem. Especially, the interactions between the flow and natural and man-made structures play the key role in our research. Currently, we are studying transport of sediments and other particles as well as pollutants in water body using various approaches such as theoretical, experimental, numerical analysis, and big-data analysis.

Coastal Engineering Laboratory is studying on characteristics of waves and water flows, and induced behaviors of the particles in water body. Based on the results, we are developing engineering basis for infrastructure for water leisure sports such as surfing as well as coastal management through non-structural methods. For this, there is a study on sediment transport and morphology change analyzed by wave characteristics and bed shear stress on surf zone. In the environmental aspect, transport of micro-plastic under waves is investigated in order to develop dynamic model. In addition, we study for flow characteristics in terms of various geological characteristics such as meandering and confluence channel and developing sediment transport model considering both bed load and suspended load.
